Evanescence took the Alt-Metal and Pop world by storm with their crossover album 'Fallen' in 2003. However, their beginnings took place back in the late '90s when Ben Moody overheard Amy Lee piano piano at a church summer camp. The rest is history.

Evanescence released their first EP, 'Evanescence' in a limited run of 100 copies on CD-R with a homemade cover through Bigwig Enterprises. The CDs were sold during a live show at Vino's in Little Rock, Arkansas. The next EP, 'Whisper', (also known as the 'Sound Asleep' EP) was released in a run of only 50 copies on CD-R without a cover (we have a homemade cover on the site), also by Bigwig. Their first full-length album 'Origin' followed in 2000 on Bigwig and was pressed in a run of 1,500 copies. The 'Origin' CD contained versions of several songs that would finally appear on 'Fallen' in 2003 and was intended to be a demo disc. Several Russian CD companies also took upon themselves to generate a slew of pirate versions of this CD and both EPs, sometimes on the same disc.

'Fallen' released on Wind-Up Entertainment contained two tracks also sported on the 'Daredevil' soundtrack, "Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal", which helped catapult the band to stardom. Evanescence enjoyed massive airplay, which allowed 'Fallen' to stay on the top 50 Billboard charts for over a year.

Their popularity brought attention to the Gothic Metal genre and has helped some bands such as Within Temptation, Tapping the Vein, Nightwish, the Gathering, and Lacuna Coil gain some attention. Although I consider them more Alt-Metal than Gothic, the dark undertones and angelic vocals give the music an atmosphere that doesn't really fit into the Alternative genre.

After playing live shows non-stop to support 'Fallen', Ben Moody bailed out of the band during a European tour and was soon replaced. The new line-up released a live album, Anywhere but Home in 2004, which came with a DVD and CD and included all their videos, extra footage, and more. I was sorely disappointed as the sound quality left a lot to be desired, and the performance was not their best; especially since I saw them live in '03 and they sounded great!
