“Shout at the Devil” is the crown jewel of the Motley Crue catalog. Each of the eleven tracks contained therein combines unfettered fire and attitude with huge hooks and raunchy guitar. While Motley Crue’s popularity would be launched into the stratosphere with subsequent platinum platters like “Theater of Pain” and “Dr. Feelgood”, “Shout at the Devil” remains their heaviest and most urgent recording to date.
From the lugubrious thudding of “Too Young to Fall in Love” to the locomotive “Red Hot”, Motley Crue’s focused approach gives each song maximum aural impact. Skinsman Tommy Lee propels “Bastard” with a furious drum intro that is heavily flanged to great effect, while Vince Neil’s leering vocals drench “Ten Seconds To Love” in raw carnality. “God Bless the Children of the Beast” is a beautifully dissonant instrumental that gives a brief respite from the metal maelstrom, segueing perfectly into the jarring opening chords of “Helter Skelter.” The band takes the Beatles’ classic to lofty heights, endowing it with ferocity merely hinted at in the original.
“Shout at the Devil” was released in 1983, but it is an album for the ages. With hits like “Looks That Kill” and the title track, this is a vital CD to have for your collection.
