Slayer were the Godfathers of Thrash Metal. Sure other bands claimed they were Thrash Bands (e.g., Metallica, Megadeth, etc), but no one could serve up a heaping onslaught of skull-crushing mayhem like Slayer. They were probably in part responsible for the Black Metal scene as well. Think about it, were there many other bands that you thought were truly evil and sinister? What? Iron Maiden? Black Sabbath? Dio? NO WAY! That was kids stuff compared to Slayer. The only other band of the era that could even come close to the sheer assault on the senses was probably Venom; however, with that said, Slayer's songs had better lyrics and were more advanced and technically sound.

Most bands let up as the years wear on; not Slayer. Their music continues to be relentless and brutally punishing today. If you have never seen Slayer live, by all means, treat yourself to an evening of devilish mayhem. Oh don't forget the ear plugs, they still play everything at 11!
