Testament – The Reunited We Stand Tour – June 4, 2005
Live at Jaxx Night Club in West Springfield, Virginia

Sixteen years ago, I witnessed an historic concert when Testament headlined during their “Practice What You Preach” tour at the Ritchie Coliseum in College Park, Maryland, with Annihilator and Wrathchild America as the supporting acts. I still rank that gig as among my all-time favorites. Each band played an inspired set, but Testament was clearly at their peak.

It turned out to be the last Testament concert I would see before the original lineup parted ways. Guitar wunderkind Alex Skolnick abruptly left Testament after “The Ritual” CD to broaden his musical horizons, intensely studying jazz between gigs with Savatage, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and his own Alex Skolnick Trio. Drummer Louie Clemente left at the same time as Skolnick, while bassist Greg Christian departed after the “Live at the Fillmore” CD was recorded in 1996. Lead vocalist Chuck Billy and guitarist Eric Peterson soldiered on and made some great music, but it seemed that the original version of the band would be shrouded in the mists of history.

The mists parted briefly in 2001, when Skolnick was drafted to play some leads on “First Strike…Still Deadly.” However, since Clemente and Christian did not play on the record, it fell short of being a full-scale reunion, and there was little to indicate any chance of all five original members sharing the same stage together.

Out of nowhere came Testament’s shocking announcement that they were doing a limited slate of reunion shows in Europe in May of 2005, dubbing it the “Ten Days in May” tour. Metal purists around the world collectively raised their fists in the air upon hearing the news. I was excited about the reunion, but my excitement turned to elation after the reunited Testament committed to playing three dates in America, two of which would take place at the world-renowned Jaxx Night Club in West Springfield, Virginia.

Jaxx is the home of metal in the Washington, DC area, and was the perfect venue for Testament to play their first two American reunion gigs. Many great bands have graced the Jaxx stage over the years, including Iced Earth, King Diamond, Kreator, Nile, Blind Guardian, WASP, Overkill, Helloween, Black Label Society, Arch Enemy, and Dark Tranquillity, to name but a few. To have Testament headline for two nights was a major coup for the club, but not surprising, considering their history of bringing in top quality metal acts from all over the world.

I bought my tickets for the June 4th show way in advance, as I had the distinct feeling the venue would quickly sell out. With only three US tour dates, people would be coming from all over America to see Bay Area thrash history being made. My foresight proved to be correct, as both the June 3rd and June 4th dates at Jaxx were sold out.

I arrived at Jaxx early on the day of the second show. It turned out to be a good decision, as I had the privilege of talking to ace sound engineer George Geranios, who was the man behind the boards for many Testament shows in the past. He flew all the way from Texas to make sure Testament’s sound would deliver all of the sonic brutality that made the band famous. George has also tweaked the sound for other metal legends like Blue Oyster Cult and Anthrax, and it was great hearing him share his insights on the music business.

Arriving early yielded another benefit, as I was able to score a Testament shirt, complete with the European and US tour dates on the back. This is not a big deal at most shows, but brisk sales from the night before had left the merchandise table with only a few t-shirts. The remaining t-shirts were quickly sold after the doors opened at 7:30 PM.

Upon securing the purchase of my t-shirt, I sat at the bar and ordered one of Jaxx’ famous Swiss Burgers, which came with a side of French fries that were perfectly seasoned by Chef Willie K. I also chugged down a few Irish Car Bombs to fuel up for the show, courtesy of my bartender Wendy. Now I was ready to thrash!

The evening’s entertainment started with Needless Guilt taking the stage, who were soon followed by the twin-guitar attack of Division, a band that has opened for many metal legends at Jaxx over the years. Abraham’s Meat Plow was the next band on the bill. This was a first-class concert at a first-rate venue. One would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the band I saw in 1989 and the reunited Testament of 2005. The magic is still there, but the band appears to have more of an appreciation of who they are collectively and as individuals. This was a reunion brought about not for money, but for five men who share a passion for music, and a brotherhood that only a select few can truly understand.
