Holland's The Gathering started out as a Death Metal act on their first album with deep growling male vocals. Bart Smits was jettisoned from the band in exchange for a new male singer and supporting female vocals for the second album. Both of the new vocalists were again ejected in exchange for the amazing vocal talents of Anneke van Giersbergen for their third release. The band finally found the voice they were looking for; Anneke remains as the singer of the band today. Over the years, the band continues to evolve like musical chameleons. They have embraced many genres, including Death, Progressive, Symphonic, Gothic, and now, continue to change.
